Magallanes/Elcano VR Rig

Spika Tech VR Project

Nimoria have participated in the Spika Tech project proposal to commemorate the fifth centenary of the first world tour. We created the two main characters: Magallanes and Elcano. My partner, Jaime, modeled and texturized them and I rigged them.

Complex rig full of features

The Art Director wanted the characters to look alive so It was necessary a rig with a wide range of posibilities. Because of that, I made a modular rig with squash and stretch even in the head and IK/FK modes. In order to make animation job easier, I added a IK/FK match tool scripted in MEL.

Facial rig is thought for motion capture and it includes mouth, lips, nouse, eyes, eyelids and eyelips controllers.

Simple animation I've done only for demostration

Modular and VR Rig

Because It is modular, it wasn't very difficult to adapt the rig for both models instead of creating one complete rig for each one. But game engines doesn't like very much modular rigs. So in order to use it in Unity or Unreal It was important to have one skeleton with only one root.

To sum up, there are two skeletons: one simple and game ready and another thought for simplify the animator's work, which transfers the animation to the game ready one.

Test animation done by Jaime Moros.
